The goal of the collaborative is to produce a quality fuel product from a waste stream and to provide research, curricular growth, and community service as well as educational opportunities. The refinery and quality testing laboratory will provide a sustainable funding stream to support student research and learning experiences from several disciplines across the Keene State College campus. The research and educational opportunities will extend far beyond KSC’s current capacity. It is anticipated that as many as 50 students per year will actively engage with faculty and staff from across the campus in learning experiences in areas such as: journalism, communication, education, refinery processing, chemistry, environmental science, business management, green business practices, occupational and environmental health, ecology, and public policy engagement. As the potential for bio-heat increases, the use of biodiesel by the City of Keene and Keene State College alone could reach an annual consumption of 400,000 gallons per year of B20. This innovative refining process will reduce the strain that waste grease, particularly brown grease, imposes upon the municipal water supply and treatment systems. Additional savings for the City of Keene are anticipated with the more focused capture and removal of this waste from the city system. Lastly, this collaborative venture will create and fund five permanent, benefited, high tech positions within the City of Keene. The Monadnock Biodiesel Collaborative is a great way to educated the community and Monadnock region on alternative sources of fuels and energy.
